NEWRY 10'S | Sat 28th Jul 2007 | | 14 tourists made the annual pilgrimmage to rostrevor for the newry 10's competition.
cricky, eddie, fawcy, andy b, smiler, nige, lee a, smythy, bob, gordy, ade crumley and new boys ashley hill, ross mccrea and richard ( antonio banderas ) irwin.
this was 3 more than last year so well done to cricky on his skippering debut. as always for this fixture, a lack of backs was our downfall, and with no recognised half backs, we were always struggling.
this year there were 5 teams; from dromore ( alcoholics only team ), armagh royal former pupuils ( including 3 internationals at their age :-0, plus 2 cobbled together newry sides.
we kicked off against an excellent armagh side, who eventually stuffed everyone, and played a very hard 30 minutes - ref must've been enjoying the show. the match was characterised by the first tackle from an armagh break. their man only had 1 man to beat, but unfortunately that man was our very own kamikazee kid - aka smiler, and his crunching hit on the sideline was a marker for the rest of the game. we put in a fighting performance and gave them a real scare, but their pace eventually saw us off 6-3.
we then lost 2 scrappy games by a score but finished with a win against a "well fueled" dromore outfit. the forwards played the only way they know how, and we got most of our scores by dozing up the middle, but a lack of nous out in the backs let in too many against us. the tackling all the way through was particularly pleasing, especially from the young lads, and the fitness held up well, so a very promising start to the season. |
