the tourists were :
gordy, fawcett, smiler, jk, maxi, lee, nige, timmy, bob, gary and darren smyth with gerry and soupy as manager/support/linesman/photographer

we managed to get a loan of the strabane grammar school minibus, for which hampty needs generous thanks and a few pints, and headed up to rostrevor in a van, a minibus and smilers bm. we scraped together 11 players - the usual casualty list denying us another 5 or 6 men, which meant there would be very little rest for anyone.

our first game was against the eventual winners armagh, and after a promising start, where smiler scored a good individual try, this annoyed the opposition and they proceeded to give us a rugby lesson - not surprising when you find out they had 3 ulster under 21 players.

after the dejection of the first game we next played last years winners banbridge, but we played with real passion in this game and gave them a stiff test, with lee getting an " anderson special " from 1 yard. the eventual score was 3-1 but we had got the fires going and were playing like we meant it.

the next opposition was dromore and we demolished a much heavier pack but with the lion's share of possession we couldn't find a cutting edge and the game finished 1-1 with timmy getting the score. it was a repeat against newry, who we had ample opportunities to beat and we conceded a very soft try to leave it 1-1 again with lee scoring a very well worked try which can be seen in soupy's expert photo montage on the website.

very well done to all the men who played, and if we'd had another recognised back we could have done a lot better. good to see iron boy back, his "mis-timed" kick-off tackles were worth the journey
alone and the semi-retired j kee and the rookies darren and lee deserve special praise.

as always, we had a great night's craic in rostrevor and it only remains for me to thank newry rfc for their hospitality and hard work and hope to see you all again next year.
