Strabane 10- Donegal 0 | Sat 29th Oct 2005 | | The team:
1.Mal 2. Mikey 3. Davy 4. James Fawcett 5. Nigel 6. Chris Hamilton 7. Eddie 8. Mitchy 9. Maxy 10. Paul 11. Ross 12. Johnny Bap 13. Mowbs 14. Stuarty 15. Housty.
Strabane's winning streak was extended to 6 games on Saturday as they overcame a resilient Tir Connell side on Saturday at Lifford road in conditions better suited to watching rugby in front of the TV and a large fire.
Mal wisely chose to play into the wind and the superb defensive effort in the first half was the catalist for another home win. Again the back row were to the fore with Eddie knocking them back in the tackle and Mitchie proving again to be a real dog on the ground distrupting opposition ball. Mal is going to ask the opposition no. 8 to run past Eddie on the first scrum every week if thats how he responds. Mr Fossett's tackle count was also very high and considering his arse is num (no Bert, i did not ask why) was impressive. Interestingly when offered Physio James responded that his 12month injury might disappear if he got a severe enough knock...interesting medical analysis i thought and then pondered on how easy it is to get into university now!
Additionally now that we have persuaded Bap that coming up in a defensive line actually involves coming up in a defensive line the backs, for the first week, looked very solid defensively although we have not really found any significant cutting edge going forward.
The second half started with the usual explosion of kicking advice from the forwards and Donegal reposting our early sorties into their 22. Saturday also proved that Bap can actually play a bit and is not only good for clearing up surplus pies, stew and the like. He carried the ball with great purpose and continually breached the gain line via going over the top of the Donegal no. 10.
The break though finally came when another set move went wrong and Mitchie went the wrong way. Our 9th forward and Keebab expert picked up from the ruck and was driven over by Mark. Housty missed the difficult conversion.
Shortly after a back line move saw both Mitchie and Paul doing the hard work for Mowbs to crash over from 4inches. Again John's accuracy was as high as Mal's lineout throwing.
Worth noting and credit to the skipper who playing the entire match injured and despite urgent pleas for medical attention stayed with his troops in the trenchs.
Notable Occurrences
1. Mals Injury and his refusal to get on the stretcher.
2. Johnny Bap can actually play a little and is not just good craic.
3. Forwards who are all kicking experts after i missed the corner from 60mtrs by 6inches
4. Housty's Conversion kicking AGAIN!
5. Mitchy's disruption of Donegal ball around rucks and mauls AGAIN.
6. Eddie getting beaten by their 8 once and then kicking the crap out of him all day
