Strabane 17 - Donegal 6

Wed 27th Oct 2004

Strabane 1st XV played Donegal away in Qualifying league four on Saturday and ended up with a comfortable 17-6 victory.

Both teams were well matched in the first half which ended up 6-6 after 2 housty penalties.

Paul McMenamin opened the scoring for Strabane in the second half with a drop goal, his second of the season. Eddie McCrea finished the game off with a superb solo try which Housty failed to convert which gave the home side a considerable advantage. This along side a Housty Penalty left a 17-6 scoreline at full time.

This was a mediocre Strabane performance against a weaker than usual Donegal side but the pack and backs would need to play better this week against Ballyshannnon.

The second XV played away on Saturday to Inishowen in Carndonagh. This was always going to be a tough game for the young Strabane side. Inishowen had a far heavier pack but the Young Strabane side held there own most of the time in the scrums. The home team was well drilled and far more aggressive going in to rucks and mauls, taking a lot of ball of Strabane players. At Halftime Inishowen were 35 points up after 5 converted tries.

The second half was much tighter with Strabane defending a lot better and being more aggressive in the pact although the home team did get a converted try in the second half leaving the final scoreline 42-0.

This is when the real fun began for the Second XV as they entertained the crowd at the pub in Inishowen. Gordy McK reinacted a try scoring dive when he fell off the stool. Literally the Strabane team were at it like Rabbits with one of the games they were playing, Not to mention the foul language while playing Fuzzy duck. Special praise must go to Garth (brooks) Caldwell for his impressive singing performance on the coach.

From Inishowen, the bus stopped in Mary Deaneys were the team continued their frolics and then unto the Cricket club were for many the night was just starting.

This Saturday's game is at Home to Ballyshannon meanwhile the two's have a difficult home match to City of Derry.
